Managers – Football management comes with huge packs but that only increases the pressure of conjuring performances for your team.
Following a streak of bad results, Newcastle United became the latest team to sack manager Steve Bruce with reports rife that the 60-year-old has been handed an £8million pay off after the sack.
Bruce sack comes eight months before his contract was set to end with other managers having forced clubs to give them a good amount for sacking them before their contracts elapsed.
So who are the managers who went home with good money after being sacked prematurely?
- Luiz Felipe Scolari – £13.6million
The Brazilian World Cup-winning coach joined Chelsea in the summer of 2008. He would only last for seventh months as owner Abraham Abrahamovic thought he wasn’t the man to steer his ship. He was paid £13.6million as a result.
- Laurent Blanc – £17million
PSG sacked Blanc in 2016 despite him winning the domestic treble in two of his three seasons in Paris. A failure to get beyond the Champions League quarter-finals contributed to his sacking and before he was replaced by Unai Emery, he was paid a tidy £17million for the sack.
- Fabio Capello – £13.4million
The outspoken Italian was appointed as the Russian national team head coach in 2012 but was sent home three years later after a group stage exit at the 2014 World Cup and an underwhelming start to Euro 2016 qualifying
It is reported that his departure cost the Russian FA a sum of £13.4million.
- Mauricio Pochettino – £12.5million
Less than six months after guiding Tottenham Hotspur to their first Champions League final, Daniel Levy thought that the Argentine wasn’t just the man to steer the club into the next level.
He was to be sent home in November 2019 when Spurs sat in the 14th position in the Premier League after 12 matches and with just three league wins to their name.
- Jose Mourinho – £9.5million and £18million
The Portuguese remain one of the managers to earn more from his sack having been sent packing twice at Chelsea and Manchester United.
His first sacking at Chelsea came in 2007 where he pocketed £18milion. Eight years later, Mourinho was again given his marching orders by Roman Abramovich as the Blues made a shocking title defense in 2015/16; the manager got £9.5million in the process.
- Antonio Conte – £26.6million
Another payoff involving Chelsea. Less is said of how much Conte was paid for his sacking but the club’s financial reports for his final year in charge show that they spent £26.6million on relieving the Italian and his staff of their duties.
Conte had guided the Blues to their fifth Premier League title in his first season in charge and helped them to the FA Cup title triumph, but a disappointing fifth-place finish the following season saw the Italian sacked at the end of the 2017/18 season.
