English Championship side AFC Bournemouth has confirmed that midfielder David Brooks has been diagnosed with stage two Hodgkin lymphoma.
The statement from the club came after the player took it upon himself to make the announcement on Wednesday after the illness was identified by his country’s medical staff.
“Although this has come as a shock to myself and my family, the prognosis is a positive one and I’m confident I’ll make a full recovery and be back playing as soon as possible,” he stated.
“Although I appreciate there will be media attention and interest, I’d like to ask that my privacy is respected in the coming months and I’ll share updates on my progress when I’m able to do so.
“Thank you, everyone, for their messages of support, it means so much to me. I look forward to seeing you all again and playing the sport I love very soon,” Brooks said.
The 24-year-old is set to begin his treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma next week.
Bournemouth who are currently on top of the English Championship table are up against Bristol City in their next league tie this Saturday.
